The following statements have been adopted/revised from foundational statements by David C. Cook Ministry Resources. These statements reflect the heart and spirit of a Kingdom Company. Each point could serve as a working draft for your Kingdom company.
A. Those We Serve:
We serve our customers as we purposely and daily serve God, and we serve every person by providing exceptional resources that assist them in accomplishing their goals.
1. Foundations:
God alone can save and bring redemption to an individual’s life. While we recognize that God is not dependent on human effort, He has, nevertheless, given us an opportunity to participate in His redemptive work. We purpose to work alongside people and organizations in seeking to fulfill the Great Commandment and the Golden Rule. We are dependent on His working in and through us, and He loves to do so. And because of life in Him, what we do makes an eternal difference.
2. Expressions:
• We show love and respect for those we serve, and we work for their highest good; therefore, our business is honest and caring, not boastful and attention getting.
• We want to be certain that what we communicate is structured in the words and culture of those we serve.
• We work to constantly increase our impact by providing exceptional resources that our customers, staff, and other businesses truly value and that communicate the truth of scripture.
• Our operations and production must be supportive of the vision of our company. Our costs must not cause pricing to be above what a customer is willing to pay.
• We can be depended on to give “honest product, prompt service and fair prices” to those we serve.
• We attempt to understand our customers and understand how our work impacts them, meeting their needs, not ours.
B. Resources:
We provide resources that encourage customers to make a life response to the truth of our witness. Furthermore, we believe that we have a responsibility not only to talk about biblical truths, but to live them.
1. Foundations:
We believe that God wants to be involved in everything we do – seven days a week, every minute of every hour. God cares about and is at work in the everyday circumstances of life. The teaching of the truth carries with it the challenge of walking that truth out in daily life; therefore, our mission to see lives changed and enriched also has personal implications for us to lead “authentic” lives. Our faith must be expressed in the minutes of our everyday lives, because our witness for God is more in what we do than what we say.
2. Expressions:
• We will not be vague, pseudo-spiritual, or false, but rather honest, practical and truthful.
• We recognize, support and encourage a great variety of positive responses to truth in Christian living according to a diversity of cultural expressions.
• We seek to discover the most compelling everyday life needs of those we serve. We focus on spiritual growth, family growth, giftedness and leadership growth, and an individual’s outreach and witness, looking to fill those needs not being adequately met by others.
• To stay relevant, we must constantly keep improving everything we do, even if only incrementally. This is one way we also stay competitive in the marketplace.
• When we are most needy and willing to admit it, God is most able to work with and through us. This also means we are listeners, valuing the input of others.
• We act with personal faithfulness and integrity and can be depended upon to keep the promises we make.
• Our personal ministry as believers cannot be at work alone; we need to be investing a portion of our personal life in the work of a local church and ministry as the Lord has gifted us.
C. People:
We value each other by giving honor through our words and actions, and by committing to each person’s success. Taking great care as we select those who desire to be a part of our company and have the right abilities and gifts, we then work together to increase our skills and capacities in order to more effectively fulfill our mission.
1. Foundations:
We believe that people are our greatest resource and that each person is gifted to make a positive contribution. Because we are made in the image of God and are loved by Him unconditionally, we strive to express this same kind of love towards others. It matters how we treat each other, showing honor and respect; it matters if there is vitality in all areas of our lives – physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally; it matters if there is a measure of “balance” between our work, our play, our family and our personal ministry expressions; and it matters if our relationships are healthy. It takes a mutual commitment and perseverance to create an environment in which each person will experience the joy of making significant contributions.
2. Expressions:
• We want to multiply God-given talent. Therefore, we need to identify talents in people, let them grow by doing, and encourage professional growth and continuous learning.
• We commit to integrity in all of our relationships. We can be counted on to be truth-seekers as well as truth-speakers.
• We quickly offer forgiveness when we have been wronged and claim responsibility and seek forgiveness when we have wronged others.
• We work together to clearly understand our goals and our mutual expectations and to give feedback.
• We recognize achievement – applauding success and learning together from our failures.
• We search for ways to develop and maintain a “family” atmosphere – part of this involves looking for ways to include our own families in our company.
• Being a part of our company family means we “share in care” through mutual participation in different processes and in the stewardship of our resources.
D. Stewardship:
Our resources (our heritage, our talents and gifts, our finances and assets, and the gospel message) have been entrusted to us, and we are accountable to those we serve, to each other, our executives and leadership team, and ultimately to God for the faithful use of them.
1. Foundations:
Our lives and resources come solely from God and belong to God. There is only so much we can do with the resources that are available. We need to generate attractive revenues in excess of expenses so that we can invest in the growth of our company. In this context, no profit is too great and no waste is too small. We are seeking as an organization to be positioned to maximize the “windows of opportunity” the Lord presents to the greatest degree that resources allow. All of our efforts together and our resources are aligned to fulfill this common eternal biblical mission: “To encourage the acceptance of Jesus Christ as personal Savior and to disciple and equip believers for lives of service.”
2. Expressions:
• We act responsibly with the bounty of resources we have in regard to our less fortunate Christian brothers and sisters, both here and abroad.
• We take a position of moderation within our own culture as well as other cultures, always aware that we are representing Christ.
• The only business is Kingdom business and our business is ministry. “Good business provides the environment, effective ministry is the result.”
• We take advantage of ministry opportunities as they present themselves with a “prudent aggressiveness.” We place an emphasis on developing new areas of outreach and reaching places/markets we’ve not been able to reach before.
• We have a short-term focus and a long-term view.
• We involve ourselves in efforts that give back to our churches and communities.
E. Teamwork:
We encourage, support and value teamwork. We work together to multiply our effectiveness and transfer our best individual gifts and energy into team effort.
1. Foundations:
There will be change, and new people will come to be a part of our company. Each one creates change in our organization as they join, and it requires personal change for each of us to make room for them. As has been said, “All of us are smarter than any one of us.” We really need each other. God’s work in the world is not dependent on any one person or organization but rather on His working through His body in its many different expressions. Our ability to work alongside and in support of others is becoming increasingly important towards meeting our organizational objectives and in the highest sense serving God’s people around the world.
2. Expressions:
• We accept the group’s goals in support of our mission. To be on the team means we are loyal to the team, we go on with the consensus of the team, and we are committed to working as a team for our common purpose.
• We focus on the gifts and skills of others, building on their strengths rather than their weaknesses.
• We are willing to take risks and learn from our mistakes, recognizing we are accountable to each other.
• It is a constant pursuit of each person to find ways to become more effective in our work both individually and together, seeking to keep our improvements simple and practical.
• We promote the success of others instead of protecting our own self-interests.
• We stay away from destructive arguments and behaviors, by keeping problems issue-oriented, seeking to build one another up, and working with others toward solutions in a timely manner.
• We take responsibility to understand what is expected, and we perform to those expectations. Others can count on us to “carry our load.”
• We each bring a willing attitude as well as our abilities and experiences to our work.
